What does the EPA PFAS rule actually require?
In 2024, the EPA finalized the first federal enforceable limits on PFAS in drinking water, setting maximum contaminant levels for PFOA, PFOS, and four other compounds. Public water systems are required to test for these and take action if levels exceed the limits. The rule does not cover private wells, which are the homeowner's responsibility.
Does reverse osmosis actually remove PFAS?
Yes. Reverse osmosis with a properly rated membrane is one of the most effective approaches for PFAS reduction at the point of use. NSF/ANSI 58 certification verifies that a system meets documented reduction performance standards for specific contaminants including certain PFAS compounds. We only specify certified systems.
Can a pitcher filter or refrigerator filter remove PFAS?
Some pitcher filters with NSF/ANSI 58 or 53 certifications for PFAS have been independently verified. Standard refrigerator filters are not certified for PFAS reduction. If PFAS reduction is the goal, we recommend a certified under-sink or whole-house system rather than relying on a pitcher or appliance filter.
Do I need whole-house PFAS treatment or just at the kitchen tap?
For most households, a certified under-sink reverse osmosis or filter system at the drinking water tap addresses the primary exposure pathway.
